The Art Studio in Rockville Centre helps the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline

Long Islanders are turning ordinary bras into works of art to be auctioned in support of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program, but some are finding it difficult to get started. To the rescue is The Art Studio in Rockville Centre offering workshops on Tuesday, June 14, and Wednesday, June 15, from 8 to 10 pm, to help people make their own special Creative Cups. The Art Studio is located at 221 North Long Beach Road in Rockville Centre.

Creative Cups™ is a thought-provoking art exhibition and fundraising event to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program. This life-affirming celebration features bras that are transformed by their creators into works of art that will be auctioned on March 16, 2017.

Artists Meryl Cittadino, Laura Montaruli and Meghan Harron will guide participants in designing and realizing their artistic vision. They will even help with the registration and submission process. People of all ages and levels of artistic talent are invited to participate.

“In the past, we have found that there are people who would like to participate but don’t know how to get started,’” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi program. “At these workshops they will be guided to make something they can be proud of.”

Workshops are two hours long, BYOB (bring your own bra-36C underwire, no pushup) and for $15, all other materials are included. Supplies include yarn, beads, buttons, trimmings, fabric, thread, paper, paints (watercolor and acrylic), tissue paper, feathers, crayons, markers, pastels, glue/hot glue, wire, duct tape, stencils, stamps, scrapbook materials and various odds and ends. If artists do not finish their bra during one workshop, they are welcome to attend a later date at no additional cost. There is a $25 registration fee payable to Adelphi University for participation in Creative Cups. Only the first 200 bras will be accepted. All bras will be professionally photographed and published in a collectable coffee table book and auctioned off at a Gala and Auction on March 16, 2017. All money raised will be used to offset the costs of running the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

For information, call 763-2050.

Please note the final submission of bras is due by July 15, 2016.
