Celebration of Survivorship 2021
Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Three survivors share their struggles and triumphs.

Three breast cancer survivors will tell their stories at the annual Celebration of Survivorship of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The Zoom event will be held on Wednesday, October 13, from 6 to 7 pm. To register visit https://breast-cancer.adelphi.edu/

Luisa Jefferson (7-year survivor)

Luisa was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2014. After successfully completing chemotherapy treatment, she had surgery followed by radiation. Luisa credits her family, especially her husband, for helping her get through the tough times during treatment. Also, her job as a finance professional played a key role in keeping her mind occupied and helped her to remain focused during her journey.

Arlette Hagans (4-year survivor)

Arlette Hagans was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2017. Arlette, who takes pride in her family, which includes three grandchildren, credits her strong faith to helping her survive and thrive throughout her journey with breast cancer. Throughout her surgeries and treatments, Arlette continued to work in the field of customer service and telemarketing, helping others. Arlette is dedicated to letting other women know the importance of keeping your faith, even when times are tough. And to always remember that together, anything is possible.

Julie Bickar Nappi (current Hotline volunteer, 3-year survivor)

At age 45, after finding a lump accidentally while rolling over in bed, Julie Bickar Nappi was diagnosed with breast cancer that had already spread to a lymph node, despite having had a negative mammogram and ultrasound only a few months prior. Her children were ages 9 and 11 at the time and were instrumental in helping Julie get through surgery, chemo and radiation. She is now cancer-free while she continues with hormone therapy, as well as participates in the national Aspirin for Breast Cancer (“ABC”) clinical trial. Both of Julie’s parents were diagnosed with later stage cancers and died young, so she strongly encourages people to become their own advocates and educate themselves about cancer. Julie is a management consultant and board member at Ardmore Home Design/Made Goods.

The mission of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, is to educate, support, empower, and advocate for breast cancer patients, professionals, and the community. To reach the hotline, which is staffed by trained breast cancer survivors, call 800-877-8077. Or, visit the website at: breast-cancer.adelphi.edu.
