Grant to Support Hispanic and African American Breast Cancer Patients

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has renewed its commitment to support the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program with a grant which will allow them to provide services to underserved women through its BEST program (Breast Education, Screening & Treatment: Patient Navigation for Breast Cancer).

BEST primarily serves African American and Hispanic women over the age of 40 in New York. Says Adelphi Breast Cancer Program Director Reyna Machado, “We’re again honored to be selected as a Mother Cabrini Health Foundation grantee. Through this partnership, and the work of countless organizations across our state, we are working to support vulnerable communities in each corner of New York.” The women served through the BEST program are amongst the most vulnerable New Yorkers and are more likely to die from the disease.  There is a significant need for bilingual education about breast health and early detection, as well as culturally-competent access services.

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of vulnerable communities, eliminate barriers to care, and bridge gaps in health services. Named after a tireless advocate for immigrants, children, and the poor, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation funds programs and initiatives across New York that either provide direct healthcare services or address the social determinants of health.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980 by the Adelphi University School of Social Work, provides bilingual education, health referrals and social work services to people affected by breast cancer. The hotline number is 800-877-8077. You are not alone.
