New bilingual Spanish speaking social worker

Adriana Valencia of Baldwin is the new Spanish-speaking bilingual social worker at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. In her position, she will be assisting community members facing barriers to care. Her role will see her providing weekly crisis intervention and patient navigation for patients served at Nassau University Medical Center Breast and Oncology clinics. In addition, Ms. Valencia will support women and families coping with breast cancer with bilingual counseling as well as facilitate bilingual support groups.

Ms. Valencia received her BA in Sociology from SUNY Plattsburgh, and her Masters in Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College.

The daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and Colombian father, Ms. Valencia has spent much of her work life working to bring services to underserved community in various roles including outreach, project management, and direct service. She began her career working with older adults as a caseworker with Neighborhood SHOPP in the South Bronx helping elders access benefits and entitlements. “Ensuring we all have a voice and having access to resources and quality care is essential for individuals and communities to thrive”, says Ms. Valencia. Her experience at SHOPP helped shape her vision and inspired her to go back to school to obtain a Master’s in Social Work. Prior to joining Adelphi, Ms. Valencia supervised a team of geriatric care mangers providing care management services to homebound older adults in Manhattan and helped launch a Caregiver Program providing caregiver support service to family members and loved ones.

Adriana joins the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program with over 20 years of professional social work experience. “We are thrilled to have an experienced and compassionate clinician join the program and support our efforts as we continue to provide services to medically underserved communities across New York State,” said Reyna Machado, Director.

“I look forward to continuing to serve our most vulnerable and addressing the barriers to care our clients face,” says Ms. Valencia. “No one should ever have to face cancer alone or lack access to care. We are here to help,” she says.
