New 4-session topic-focused support groups for breast cancer survivors

People diagnosed with breast cancer often express a variety of specific concerns but unfortunately do not have the opportunity to discuss them in depth. To meet this need the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is now offering new short-term groups for discussion and support, meeting in Garden City.

The groups—which are free and limited to 10 people–will meet for 90 minutes for four consecutive weeks, focusing on a particular aspect of the topic each week.

The first group “Sex and Intimacy” runs for four consecutive Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm, starting on September 24. Topics are: What we know about sex, intimacy and breast cancer (September 24); Sex and communication (October 1); Questions for the expert (October 8); and What can I take away from this? (October 15).

The second group “Nutrition” runs for four consecutive Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm, starting October 29. Topics are: What is good nutrition? (October 29); How we feel about food (November 5); Eating out (November 12); and Making it work for you (November 19).

“We feel that this new format will allow participants to explore topics of mutual concern,” says counseling and educational coordinator Erin Nau.

Each group will accommodate only 10 members and members must commit to attending the entire 4-week session.  All groups are free but registration is required. Groups will meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work. To register, call Ms. Nau at 516-877-4314.
