A Celebration of International Education

by Nii Akrofi Smart-Abbey, MFA '20 (anticipated)

With a diverse population of students and faculty from around the world, Adelphi University is fast becoming a leading global institution committed to creating more programs with a global appeal for students.

For a week in November, Adelphi showcases its commitment to our multicultural community during International Education Week. An initiative of the United States Department of State and United States Department of Education, the week is designed to encourage both U.S. and global students to learn about global affairs, as well as highlight study-abroad opportunities and one another’s cultures.

“With International Education Week, we have the opportunity of experiencing and celebrating the richness of the many cultures that make up our community,” said Susan Briziarelli, PhD, assistant provost for global affairs. “Wendy Badala does an amazing job of organizing it.”

Badala, the University’s director of International Services, noted, “International Education Week is an opportunity for the Adelphi community to come together to showcase our culture, learn from each other and celebrate what makes the Panther family so exceptional and memorable.”

A Week of Events

This year, International Education Week takes place from November 16 through November 22. Adelphi is hosting a variety of fun and educational activities. Traditional favorites, such as Afternoon Tea and East Meets West, will return, as will the popular Study Abroad Photo Contest reception.

These favorites will be joined by new offerings such as Global Voices, where individuals will discuss the importance of global experiences and share their own, and Tastings at the Tenement Museum, said Badala.

“For the first time, as part of the International Education Week celebration, Adelphi will welcome the Town of Hempstead to campus on Wednesday, November 20, to process passport applications and take passport photos,” said Shannon Harrison, director of international education. “Completed applications will be processed and forwarded to passports services on the same day.” She recommends that anyone wishing to apply for a passport should first review information available on the U.S. Department of State website.

Harrison pointed out that we can follow our faculty’s global reach on this online map(and reminds faculty this is a great time to update the International Experience portion of their faculty profiles so it’s reflected on the map).

Badala added, “There is an opportunity for everyone during this week, and all are welcome to participate. Bring your students, your professors, your children, partners and friends! All are encouraged to attend.”
