Adelphi Adopts Test-Optional Policy for Fall 2021, Spring 2022 Admission

Admission to Adelphi University will become standardized-test-optional for current high school juniors applying for admission this coming year, recognizing the difficulty of taking SATs or ACTs during the pandemic.

In collaboration with University leadership, the Adelphi Faculty Senate approved the proposal this week, joining many colleges and universities around the nation taking the step to adopt temporary or permanent test-optional measures.

“Adelphi has long held a commitment to the holistic review of applications for admission, recognizing that a test score does not always reflect the potential of an individual,” said Kristen Capezza, vice president for enrollment management and University communications. “We believe a shift to test-optional offers the flexibility needed during this unprecedented time and removes barriers for our applicants. We hope that this decision helps to reduce the stress of an already complicated process for many students and families who are considering the benefits of an Adelphi education and experience.”

Adelphi has adopted a temporary test-optional policy, allowing students the option but not the requirement to submit the SAT or ACT for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 admission. In addition, merit scholarships will not be contingent on submission of test scores. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Adelphi had been evaluating a permanent shift to test-optional and will continue to do so in the interim.

Current high school juniors and their preparations for the college admissions process have been greatly impacted by the pandemic, most notably the cancellation of SAT and ACT exams (March, May and June administrations had been canceled as of April 2020). While the exam administrators have suggested a potential solution of online testing, the University recognizes significant inequities that this would cause for students.

Prospective students who are non-native English speakers will still be required to submit English language exam scores that demonstrate their proficiency in the language. Additionally, a select few joint degree programs will require submission of test scores on the basis of partner institution requirements. Should any partner institutions modify their requirements to become test-optional, Adelphi will counsel students accordingly.
