Adelphi Associate Provost to Receive LIBN Diversity in Business Award

Since 2016, Long Island Business News (LIBN) has highlighted the outstanding achievements of business leaders of diverse ethnic backgrounds and those with disabilities who actively support the growth of diversity and equality in the Long Island community. LIBN has chosen to honor Anne Mungai, PhD, Adelphi University’s associate provost for strategic initiatives and graduate studies, with a 2020 Diversity in Business Award.

According to LIBN, honorees of the Diversity in Business Award show a steady commitment to creating an inclusive workforce that reflects the diversity of Long Island and promotes equality through commitment. Dr. Mungai has displayed this commitment during her many years at Adelphi and throughout her career in higher education and philanthropic efforts in her personal life.

“I am truly honored to receive the Long Island Business News Diversity Award,” said Dr. Mungai. “Diversity is not just about differences, but about the human similarities and acceptance of each other.”

In her current role, Dr. Mungai is responsible for coordinating academic strategic initiatives, developing academic-community partnerships, and supporting faculty diversity initiatives and faculty training and recognition. She also provides centralized leadership and support relating to graduate education and leads faculty diversity initiatives related to the recruitment, hiring, onboarding and retention of diverse faculty in collaboration with Adelphi’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Dr. Mungai joined Adelphi in 1998 as an education professor and served as chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education for 11 years and for two years as interim dean of the Adelphi University College of Education and Health Sciences.

Dr. Mungai is also the co-founder of the Caroline Children’s Home and the Caroline School, which serve orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya. She is a prolific researcher, speaker and author in the areas of school reform, special education, and multicultural and gender issues in education.

“We should all strive to make our world a better place for all by valuing what each person brings to the table,” Dr. Mungai said. “I live by the African saying of ‘UBUNTU,’ which means ‘I am because you are.’ Therefore, each one of us is important to the universe. Let your light shine in your community!”

Honorees will be featured in a special publication of Long Island Business News and celebrated at an awards ceremony on July 21.
