Adelphi Event Shows Women the Way to Success in Accounting

Adelphi alumnae are blazing a path in the field of accounting, and early this year, three who have achieved partnerships or C-level positions at leading firms returned to campus to discuss their careers.

In “Women on the Move,” Ellen Labita of Baker Tilly, Tina Catalina of Marcum LLP, and Kim Petry of Be Balanced were joined by member of the Dean’s Accounting Advisory Board Janet Bernier of BDO to talk about the challenges and impediments they faced, the mentors who helped them, and workplace issues highlighted by the MeToo movement. They also fielded questions from the large audience of students who attended, including ones about the leadership lessons they’ve learned and the advice they have on salary negotiation.

“Women on the Move,” which was moderated by Adelphi alumna Arianna Georgiadis of Mazars LLP, was the first leadership panel hosted by the Accounting Society and the Beta Alpha Psi Honor Society. The event was organized by two of undergraduates, Jennifer Blandenburgo, president of the Accounting Society and Hussna Javed, president of Beta Alpha Psi.

Future events will also focus on achieving success in the business world, complementing the accounting department’s efforts to prepare students for the CPA exam and build professional connections.
