Adelphi Introduces Five New 4+1 Accelerated Degree Programs

Five new accelerated degree programs recently introduced at Adelphi University make it possible to obtain a bachelor’s in four years then a master’s in just one additional year of study. The programs include statistics, mathematics, health education, physical education and exercise science.

  • Through Adelphi’s 4+1 Bachelor of Science in Computer Science/Master of Science in Computer Science, students will gain the skills, knowledge and training required to create cutting-edge systems, adapt to the latest technological innovations, and translate a passion for computing science into more career possibilities. Graduates are qualified for a wide range of jobs in some of today’s fastest-growing fields, including software engineer, developer, systems engineer, web application programmer, mobile app developer, cybersecurity analyst and systems architect. “As a computer science student, you will learn how to design and build secure software systems, mobile apps and games,” said Kees Leune, PhD, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science at Adelphi. “With small class sizes and professors who are committed to student success, Adelphi offers a personalized experience for everyone.”
  • A new 4+1 Bachelor of Science in Mathematics/Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Statistics—the only program of its kind on Long Island—prepares the next generation of professionals to meet the growing demand of jobs in modeling and data manipulation. This program offers an industry-based educational experience, bridging the gap between the classroom and the office. Students begin their first year working with data, then dig deep into statistics, mathematical modeling, machine learning and more over the next four years. Students learn in a wide range of settings: classrooms, consulting centers, internships and hands-on research with faculty members. Graduates can find employment in cutting-edge fields including statistics, engineering, scientific computing, statistical analysis, mathematical finance, biomedical engineering, mathematical economics, operations research and management science. “The 4+1 degree programs give our students the tools employers are looking for in an expedited, intensive and problem-solving-based format,” said Joshua P. Hiller, PhD, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science. “The students learn the art and science of advanced data analytics. Our degree program combines this advanced knowledge with real-world problems from industry.”
  • The 4+1 Bachelor of Science in Physical Education/Master of Arts in Health Education gives students the tools and confidence to encourage healthy living and prevent, reduce and defer risky behaviors in children of all ages. After completing the program, students will be eligible for the NYS Pre-K–12 teacher certification in physical education and health education, which allows them to teach physical education and health education in public, charter or private schools anywhere in the state. Many school districts in New York state and elsewhere now require candidates to be certified in physical education and health education. With both certifications as well as substantive field experience on their résumé, they will be attractive candidates for any school district. “Adelphi University has been a regional leader in health and physical education teacher preparation for over 70 years,” said Kevin Mercier, EdD, associate professor and program director for undergraduate physical education at Adelphi. “Adelphi’s 4+1 pathway is the perfect option for aspiring health and physical educators who want a clear, efficient and affordable path to teacher certification.”
  • With the 4+1 Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science/Master of Science in Exercise Science and  4+1 Bachelor of Science in Physical Education/Master of Arts in Health Education programs, students graduate with the tools to work in fields like strength and conditioning, exercise leadership, personal training, pre-physical therapy education, and more. They also learn to improve the health and fitness of a diverse set of populations, including high-level and recreational athletes as well as individuals diagnosed with cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, orthopedic or metabolic problems. “Adelphi’s accelerated exercise science program provides motivated students an opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in as little as five years,” said Robert Otto, PhD, professor and director of health and sport sciences. John Wygand, clinical associate professor and director of health and sport sciences, added, “This program is a cost-effective, efficient path to exercise science careers that relate to strength and conditioning, clinical exercise physiology, health and wellness and allied health.”
