Adelphi Nurses on the COVID-19 Battlefront
They work at Northwell Health, NYU Winthrop Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and other healthcare institutions, in such areas as neurosurgical medicine, cardiothoracic surgery and emergency medicine. They’re faculty, alumni and even current students of the College of Nursing and Public Health (CNPH) — healthcare heroes working hard under difficult conditions to save lives and comfort patients during the coronavirus pandemic.
The College of Nursing and Public Health has been sharing their stories on its LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts. These posts offer messages of hope and inspiration, appreciation for colleagues and the joy of being able to put nursing skills into practice.
The College is doing its part as well, thanking our healthcare workers by sending pizzas to local hospitals.
“CNPH is extraordinarily proud of the frontline dedication and compassion displayed by our faculty, students and alumni,” said Caitlin McElroy, special assistant to Dean Elaine Smith ’78, MS ’88, EdD, and administrator of the College’s social media accounts. “So that we may continue to express our gratitude and highlight these healthcare heroes, we ask that students, faculty and alumni continue to share their stories, ideas and photos with us. The Adelphi community wants to hear from you.”

Clinical Assistant Professor Daniel McWeeney ’07, DNP, works in the emergency department at NYU Winthrop Hospital. “Throughout all of this, I am reminded why I chose to be a nurse.”
Kassandra Vetrano, undergraduate nursing student, answered Governor Andrew Cuomo’s request for healthcare volunteers. “When I’m at the hospital, I’m doing my calling and my job. To help, heal and care for those in need.”
Simulation Lab Director Anthony Egan has been helping recovering New York City Fire Department members via telehealth appointments.
Chelsea Wollman ’14 works in North Shore University Hospital’s neurosurgical intensive care unit. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. We are stronger together and we will get through this TOGETHER.”
Ethan Bravin ’19 has been comforting sick patients at North Shore University Hospital who may not be able to receive visitors.
Alyssa Cahill ’12 is taking care of COVID-19 patients in the cardiac operating room of St. Francis Hospital (Catholic Health Services). “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”
Clinical Associate Professor Beth Heydemann serves as the chief nurse practitioner in the department of cardiothoracic surgery at NYU Winthrop Hospital. “I am grateful to practice amongst some of the most caring and brilliant members of the healthcare profession. They are truly saving lives and also providing a compassionate environment.”
Senior Danielle Di Prizito has been serving at St. Francis Hospital (Catholic Health Services). “What is keeping me going is knowing that I am making an impact on these patients, even if that means just standing at their bedside[s] and keeping them company.”
“Care for one, that’s love. Care for all, that’s nursing,” said Jonathan Moucha, a senior currently serving at a Northwell Health facility.
This pizza lunch went to healthcare teams at Mount Sinai South Nassau.
The College of Nursing and Public Health showed their appreciation to healthcare heroes at Mercy Medical Center (Catholic Health Services) by supplying a pizza lunch.
The College of Nursing and Public Health has been supplying healthcare teams at area hospitals with Wednesday pizza lunches, this time at Huntington Hospital (Northwell Health).
