The New York Post recently reported on the “ax your past” party trend in New Jersey. Party-goers can literally bury the hatchet by throwing axes at a bulls-eye or at a photo of their former partners at Stumpy’s Hatchet House in Eatontown, New Jersey.
Deborah Serani, Psy.D, adjunct professor at Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies and author of Depression in Later Life: An Essential Guide, commented on the popularity of these parties.
“This is something that could have some benefits,” Serani said. “Its constructive deconstruction. It’s a way to take excess energy that may be agitating you and use it in a productive way. As long as it’s all in fun, I don’t see anything wrong with it.”
Serani also added, “I imagine it would be extremely satisfying.”
