Some of you may have noticed newly installed equipment in one of the first-floor accessible restrooms located in Swirbul Library. The Student Access Office (SAO) recently advocated for the installation of a device referred to as a Hoyer Lift system.
“The Hoyer Lift system is an assistive device that allows for the safe and easy transfer of a person and significantly minimizes the risk of injury,” said Brian Flatley, MS ’19, associate director of the Student Access Office. “It ensures equal access to individuals on campus with a physical mobility disability.” The person using the lift is assisted by another person, usually a personal care attendant.
“Adelphi is committed to diversity and inclusion, as well as to creating a warm and welcoming environment,” Flatley said.
The Hoyer Lift is the latest addition to making Adelphi more accessible and inclusive for our students and visitors. In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Adelphi University community is dedicated to ensuring support and equal access to persons with disabilities.
Adelphi University continues to strive toward creating an inclusive campus environment through Universal Design concepts, including access to adaptable equipment such as the Hoyer Lift system. The Hoyer Lift promotes “awareness, advocacy and the removal of barriers on campus,” said Flatley.
