With another generous commitment to Adelphi University, Richard K. Garner, Ph.D., dean of Adelphi’s Honors College, has become the 21st member of the University’s Million Dollar Round Table and the first Adelphi employee to join the elite giving society. Dr. Garner’s contribution will support endowed scholarship funds for Honors College students, which he created in 2004 with an initial commitment and has continued to support through fundraising and ongoing donations.
“I think my greatest good fortune in what has surely been my very lucky life was the opportunity to come to Adelphi as the founding dean of the Honors College,” Dr. Garner said. “My work here since 1994 has been the most rewarding experience in my life. I am thrilled that I’m able to make a significant contribution to the future health of the Honors College and I hope that my enthusiasm will continue to inspire others to support Adelphi.”
Dr. Garner established six Honors College scholarship endowments in recognition of relatives who taught or were involved with education. Since making his first gift to Adelphi in 2001, he has personally contributed more than $1 million to the University.
“Richard’s steadfast commitment to Honors College student success is unparalleled,” said Adelphi President Christine M. Riordan. “He continues to set an outstanding example for everyone in the Adelphi family. The trustees and I are extremely grateful for his ongoing generosity and thrilled to welcome him to Adelphi’s most prestigious giving society.”
Already, more than 20 Adelphi Honors College students have benefited from the scholarship endowments established by Dr. Garner in 2004. Honors College alumni have generously supported the endowments through their own annual gifts. A record 40.6 percent of Honors College alumni contributed to the 2015 campaign for these Honors scholarship endowments.
