Amidst the Pandemic, Adelphi Professor Offers a Song of Hope

Adelphi faculty and administrators have contributed to the fight against the coronavirus in many different ways, from working on the front lines, to providing personal protective equipment and meals to local hospitals, to conducting research.

Now, the faculty has made a musical contribution, as Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and University Professor Paul Moravec united more than 100 opera singers to deliver a song to lift the spirits of a world battered by the pandemic.

The virtual performance of Moravec’s choral work “Light Shall Lift Us,” which he wrote with his librettist, Mark Campbell, premiered on the OPERA America website on May 14, 2020. The 107 singers who appear in the video each recorded their parts at home.

Creating the video was a moving experience for Moravec. “For me, it is truly the privilege of a lifetime,” he wrote on his website, paulmoravec.com. “Mark’s and my message transcends all boundaries: “Light shall lift us, EVERYONE.”

Watch, listen and be lifted up.
