College of Nursing and Public Health Awarded for Excellence in Nursing Education and for the RN to BSN Program

Nursing Majors Cheering
Adelphi’s College of Nursing and Public Health (CNPH) has recently won two prestigious awards: one for excellence in nursing education; the other for having its program that enables registered nurses (RNs) to earn a valuable Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

The National League for Nursing: Center of Excellence in Nursing Education-Advancing the Science of Nursing Education

The College was one of 10 nursing programs from across the country and the academic spectrum of higher education in nursing, leading teaching hospitals and clinical sites to receive a four-year designation as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education-Advancing the Science of Nursing Education, from the National League for Nursing.

Adelphi was the only institution awarded for Advancing the Science of Nursing Education. Honorees in other categories include Johns Hopkins, Duke and Vanderbilt universities.

“Centers of Excellence help raise the bar for all nursing programs by role modeling visionary leadership and environments of inclusive excellence,” said National League for Nursing CEO Beverly Malone, PhD.

According to Elaine Smith ’78, MS ’88, EdD, dean of the College of Nursing and Public Health, this recognition is designed to distinguish those organizations that demonstrate sustained, evidence-based, and substantive innovation in the selected area; conduct ongoing research to document the effectiveness of such innovation; set high standards for themselves; and are committed to continuous quality improvement.

“Such recognition indicates a commitment by the organization as a whole to pursue and sustain excellence in a selected area,” she said. “I am honored that our College has received this distinction. It is a tribute to the excellence of our faculty and their commitment to the science of teaching and learning.”

She emphasized that CNPH was the only school in the country to newly receive distinction in the Advancing the Science category this year.

Dr. Smith explained that the designation application process requires extensive evidence of meeting the stringent programmatic criteria. She acknowledged the efforts of Maryann Forbes, PhD, associate dean for academic affairs, who “led our faculty team to success.”

Award recipients will be recognized formally during the 2019 NLN Education Summit in Washington, D.C., in late September.

Nursingprocess.org: Top 10 Best Accredited RN to BSN Programs in New York State for 2019–2020

CNPH’s RN to BSN program was named one of the Top 10 Best Accredited RN to BSN Programs in New York State for 2019–2020 by Nursingprocess.org.

The ranking criteria include accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the past four years’ NCLEX pass rates, graduation rates, net price, student-to-nursing faculty ratio and faculty ratings.

Dr. Smith said she is honored by the recognition for a program that for many years has allowed hundreds of practicing registered nurses to obtain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees, which “enhance their professional practice, develop leadership skills and prepare for promotional opportunities or graduate study,” she said.

The program will help even more RNs earn this valuable degree when it moves to an online format in the spring of 2020. Students will continue to learn from and engage with CNPH faculty and gain clinical experience in community health nursing, while benefiting from the flexibility offered by the online format to better serve working professionals and students outside Adelphi’s vicinity.
