Dean Elaine Smith to Receive Premier Business Women Award

Elaine Smith

Herald Community Newspapers has selected Elaine L. Smith ’78, MS ’88, EdD, dean of Adelphi’s College of Nursing and Public Health (CNPH), as a recipient of the 2020 Premier Business Women of Long Island Award. The award recognizes the outstanding career achievements and community contributions of women in business on Long Island.

“Dr. Smith has done an exemplary job of managing tremendous growth and expansion in CNPH,” said Steve Everett, DMA, Adelphi’s provost and executive vice president.

In 2019, Dr. Smith was appointed CNPH dean after having been interim dean for more than two years. Under her leadership, CNPH has increased overall enrollment and the diversity of its students and faculty; added several new graduate-level academic programs; put greater emphasis on technology, given tech’s ever-growing importance and impact in healthcare; boosted the College’s national rankings; and strengthened its relationships with Long Island hospitals and other community partners.

“Her expertise in nursing education, quality and safety competencies, and healthcare administration—as well as her vision for the evolution of nursing—will serve her well as this College continues to grow and evolve into one of New York’s premier colleges for nursing and public health,” said Dr. Everett.

Under Dr. Smith’s leadership, nursing has become the largest school under the Adelphi umbrella, with 1,600-plus undergraduate students and 400-plus graduate students.

Dr. Smith and all recipients of the 2020 Premier Business Women of Long Island Award will receive membership and induction into the Richner Business Network and be celebrated at a gala event which is currently scheduled for May 11.
