The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is expanding its outreach to women in underserved communities
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is expanding its outreach to women in underserved communities through a grant to its BEST program (Breast Education, Screening & Treatment) from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. The funds have allowed the program to hire a new Spanish speaking social worker, Adriana Valencia from Baldwin, and promote current staff member Angelica Medina of Westbury to the position of outreach program supervisor.
The BEST project primarily serves African American and Hispanic women over the age of 40 on Long Island. Says Adelphi Breast Cancer Program executive director Reyna Machado, “There is a significant need for education about breast health and early detection, as well as culturally-competent navigation to access services to these populations.”
The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization with the mission to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable New Yorkers. The Foundation is named for Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian-American Roman Catholic nun who advocated for immigrants, children and poor people. In 1946, she was canonized a saint by Pope Pius XII in recognition of her holiness and service to mankind and was named Patroness of Immigrants in 1950. The grant to the Adelphi program is one of 500 made by the Cabrini Foundation. Says Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, Chief Executive Officer of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, “Mother Cabrini spent her life devoted to those who faced the greatest struggles, and the Foundation named in her honor is proudly carrying on her legacy. From supporting pediatric cardiac care units in children’s hospitals to expanding mental health services to enhancing immigrants’ access to services, our inaugural grants are already making a difference in communities across New York State.”
