Adelphi Makes the Fiske Guide Best Buy List for the 11th Time

by Bonnie Eissner

FiskeBestBuy_6x4The 2017 issue of the best-selling Fiske Guide to Colleges is out, and Adelphi University has made the guide’s Best Buy list for the 11th straight year. Adelphi is just one of three private colleges in New York State and 26 nationwide to make the cut. Its mix of affordability and academic strength qualified it as a best buy.

The Fiske Guide editors base their reviews largely on student feedback and portray Adelphi as a school that “lets you taste urban life without being overwhelmed.” Students described Adelphi as a safe and welcoming community where “you really get to know other students and professors.” According to Fiske, “students speak of a palpable sense of energy among students and faculty.”

“Most professors are very available outside of class time and are always willing to assist with classwork and material that might go beyond the course syllabus,” said an English literature major.

The guide calls special attention to Adelphi’s Levermore Global Scholars (LGS) program and its Honors College, which one student calls “particularly distinctive.” That student explained: “LGS is what first attracted me to Adelphi, as they offer many classes focused on international issues, study abroad opportunities and trips to the United Nations and other important places and events in NYC that are related to being a global citizen.”

The guide also notes strength in areas such as nursing, health sciences, business, psychology and the fine and performing arts. The editors point out that Adelphi’s Robert B. Willumstad School of Business is among “an elite group of fewer than 10 percent of the world’s business schools” to earn accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

Students commented that they feel safe at Adelphi’s Garden City campus. “Campus security is very helpful. I have never felt unsafe on campus,” said one senior.

The Fiske Guide mentions Adelphi’s “competitive” Division II athletic teams (the Panthers) and its intramural sports, calling the women’s lacrosse team “a powerhouse” and noting that men’s basketball is a “perennial tournament competitor.” The editors call out Adelphi’s repeated success at winning the “coveted Northeast-10 Conference President’s Cup, awarded to the most outstanding program.”

In summing up Adelphi’s mix of personal attention and opportunities to get involved, one student said, “If you want to be involved in research, in service, in improving the school, in creating a vibrant community, you will find people who are there to support and help you reach those goals.”
