Free Summer College-Readiness Program Is Set for Hispanic High School Students

Adelphi’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion will host a summer college-readiness program free of charge for Hispanic high school students, scheduled for August 1 to August 4. Called the Hispanic Community Partnership Program, this is one of Adelphi’s initiatives in becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution, said Estefania Zea, project coordinator, Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Nominations, including self-nominations, will be accepted for all Hispanic rising high school seniors. Those who would be the first in their families to attend college will especially benefit from the program. “The program will give them a glimpse into college life while gaining the necessary tools and resources to pursue a college degree with confidence,” Zea said.

The program will accept only 25 rising seniors in good academic standing—each of whom must be nominated by May 15, 2019. It will consist of workshops, such as Critical Reading and Writing; Science, Math, Technology Advancement; Navigating the College Application Process and The Importance of Mentoring. There will also be a financial literacy component. A cultural event trip to New York City will be included as well. During a closing ceremony, certificates will be awarded.
