Grant to Support Underserved Breast Cancer Patients

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has renewed its commitment to support the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, with a 2021 grant providing services to underserved women through its BEST program (Breast Education, Screening & Treatment). The BEST project primarily serves African American and Hispanic women over the age of 40 on Long Island.

Says Adelphi program director Reyna Machado: “Over the past six-months, we have received a 70 percent increase in calls to the hotline.” Machado says women have been delaying getting routine mammograms due to fear of COVID-19. Further, challenges regarding transportation, food insecurity, homelessness and fears of deportation have all been exacerbated by the pandemic. We are so grateful to the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for their renewed funding which will allow us to ensure these barriers do not interfere with a patient’s ability to obtain life-saving treatment.

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization with the mission to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable New Yorkers. The Foundation is named for Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian-American Roman Catholic nun who advocated for immigrants, children and poor people. In 1946, she was canonized a saint by Pope Pius XII in recognition of her holiness and service to mankind and was named Patroness of Immigrants in 1950 Alfred F. Kelly, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of Visa and Chair of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation Board., says “As the largest healthcare foundation in New York State, it is a vital part of our mission to be on the front lines assisting during this pandemic. We are working to get urgently needed funds across the state to organizations supporting New Yorkers most in need.”

Last year’s grant allowed the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to hire a new Spanish speaking social worker, Adriana Valencia from Baldwin, and promote current staff member Angelica Medina of Westbury to the position of outreach program supervisor.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program provides education, health referrals and licensed social work services to people affected by breast cancer. The hotline number is 800-877-8077. You are not alone.
