How to Create Universal Child Care

Even in this year’s contentious presidential election campaign, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have agreed on one issue: the need for expanded access to child care for working families. In a recent essay published by the online journal, The Conversation, Elizabeth Palley, Ph.D., professor in the School of Social Work at Adelphi University, and her colleague Corey Shdaimah, Ph.D., from the University of Maryland, propose ways to move forward on this issue to create a universal child care program.
“We believe there is a window of opportunity to develop broad-based support not only across party lines but across sectors—business, faith organizations, feminists, employers and unions,” they write. “Advocates could take advantage of this. A coalition, cutting across party lines, could work together to create a clear agenda around child care policy. Child care providers have been an undervalued low-wage workforce for far too long. They too need to be heard, as they are an important voice within this coalition.”
