New opportunity for breast cancer survivors to help in New York State

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program today announced that it is expanding its volunteer corps to include breast cancer survivors throughout New York State. Previously volunteers had to live in the NY Metropolitan area, where the hotline is located “But now, since so much can be done virtually,” says director Reyna Machado, “we are able to offer all our training on-line for New Yorkers wherever they live.”

The Adelphi hotline is the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country, established in 1980 by the Adelphi University School of Social Work and staffed by professionally trained and supervised volunteers who are breast cancer survivors, as well as social workers. Volunteers offer information regarding mammography screening referrals, treatment, support services and survivorship resources, as well as “Peer to Peer,” which matches individuals to survivors with similar diagnoses and treatment. “Volunteers are on-call to provide ongoing support throughout your journey, and work closely with our social workers to best address your needs,” says Machado. All services are completely free and confidential.

Training will begin on October 30 with three more sessions held on November 6, 13 and 20, all from 10 am to 1 pm. Virtual attendance at all four sessions is required. To find out more about training and arrange an interview, contact Nina Foley, Volunteer and Hotline Coordinator, at 516-877-4315 or email her at nfoley@adelphi.edu.
