New Year, New Name, New Direction for Ruth S. Ammon School of Education

The new year is ushering in big changes for what has until now been called the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education. The School is now a College with a new name: the College of Education and Health Sciences.

The School previously encompassed three departments:

• The Department of Curriculum and Instruction
• The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders
• The Department of Exercise Science, Health Studies, Physical Education and Sport Management

As Anne Mungai, Ph.D., interim dean of the newly named College, explained, the College has restructured to become “two schools under one umbrella.” In other words, one College, two Schools and two departments. 

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction will carry on the name of the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education. The Department of Exercise Science, Health Studies, Physical Education and Sport Management will now be known more concisely as the Department of Health and Sport Sciences (HSS). HSS has merged with the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) to form the new School of Health Sciences.

According to Provost and Executive Vice President Steve Everett, D.M.A., the merged School of Health Sciences will create a ” unified school administrative structure” and connect how Adelphi provides a “robust intellectual environment where human health is an important component of our research and teaching strength.” He added, “I am confident that this naming will be instrumental in highlighting and promoting the range of the excellent teaching and research occurring throughout the College.”

“Kudos to faculty, staff and administrators, who worked deliberately and thoughtfully to realign our curricula, programs and internal structure to better meet the needs of our students,” said Dr. Mungai. “This restructure will facilitate the growth and further development of our world-class professional education programs. We are excited to see what the future holds. Now the real work begins!”
