Scott Dimig ’06 Tells Class of 2023 How to Make College a Smash Success

Scott Dimig '06, speaking at Matriculation

Every August, Adelphi holds our Matriculation ceremony, a tradition in which the board of trustees, senior leadership and faculty welcome first-year students to the Adelphi community of scholars. At this year’s ceremony, the Matriculation speaker was one of Adelphi’s own—Scott Dimig ’06, vice president, promotion, at Epic Records. He may be 17 years removed from his first semester at Adelphi, but his excitement and energy matched that of the Class of 2023.

“I give speeches all the time,” Dimig said. “But this speech is making me the most excited. It’s because the future of our world sits in the hands of everyone that’s in this room today.”

Dimig related how he came to Adelphi in 2002 with a scholarship in track and field, “not nervous, but excited and eager to start creating what my future would eventually become.”

His energy and enthusiasm have carried Dimig from being an active and involved student at Adelphi to a more than 15-year career at Sony’s Epic Records (the past three as vice president of promotion) that began when he interned there as an Adelphi student. Today he helps promote the smash hits of artists such as Camila Cabello, Travis Scott, Meghan Trainor, French Montana and DJ Khaled. He is an active member of Musicians On Call, an organization bringing the healing power of music to the bedside of sick children around the country. One of Adelphi’s 10 Under 10 of 2012, Dimig remains dedicated to his alma mater, serving on the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business’ Dean’s Advisory Board.

The “keys to success,” he told students, is to get involved in all Adelphi has to offer and take on internships to help determine whether a chosen career path is the right fit. But most of all, “While you create memories and experiences over the next four years, do it with passion and believe in yourself,” he said. “If you believe in yourself, then you can really accomplish anything. No one in this world can hold you back but you.

“Best of luck on your journey, Class of 2023,” Dimig concluded. “Think big, dream huge… . You yourself can be a smash!”
