Spirit Weekend 2018 ushered in a big change for Adelphi. For the first time, instead of a king and queen, the undergraduate body selected three winners to be given the more gender-inclusive title of Prestigious Panthers.
“The move was made in an effort to embrace diversity and gender inclusivity within our community,” said Thomas Severin, assistant director of the Center for Student Involvement (CSI).
Now CSI is encouraging seniors—regardless of gender, gender identity and gender expression—to nominate themselves to be considered for the 2019 Spirit Court and possibly go on to run for the Prestigious Panther title. Applications for candidacy are due by September 20, 2019.
“We’re looking for students who represent the best of Adelphi: academically excellent, creative, innovative, collaborative, globally aware, respectful and with integrity and, of course, Panther pride!” said Severin.
The self-nominated students will be interviewed by administrators and faculty from various departments, who will select the members of the Spirit Court. These students will then campaign for the Prestigious Panther position, with undergraduate student body votes determining the three winners. At the Panther Carnival at Spirit Weekend, President Christine M. Riordan will announce the winners and award them with plaques and sashes.
“Serving as Prestigious Panther is an incredible opportunity to show your love for Adelphi University and to showcase to our students, alumni and community all an Adelphi experience offers,” said Severin. “We are excited for this year’s pool of candidates to serve on Spirit Court and as Prestigious Panthers.”
