The Adelphi Community Is Helping the Environment One Car at a Time

by Choya Randolph, MFA '18

When it comes to helping the environment, Adelphi is dedicated to taking action. For the fourth year in a row, Adelphi has placed first in the Car Free Day Long Island competition. Car Free Day is an annual international event in which people are encouraged to use mass transit, walk or carpool to raise awareness about the impact their commute has on their home and the Earth. This year’s Car Free Day Long Island was on Friday, September 20.

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) led the initiative. With help from commuter assistants, Commuter Student Organization members and the Environmental Action Coalition, CSI collected 1,118 pledges from the Adelphi community. The pledge encourages people to use mass transit, walk or carpool. For the second year in a row, Adelphi was the overall winner in every category, beating out companies and municipalities.

“This title shows Adelphi University’s commitment to being environmentally conscious as well as their hard work and determination to succeed,” said Alexa Grosskreuz, senior assistant director of the Center for Student Involvement.

Lisa Belinsky, program manager, said, “I am amazed at how many pledges [Adelphi’s] commuter assistants were able to get for Car Free Day Long Island in the last days leading up to Friday—it paid off and you all won again! Thanks for your continued support and the energy of your students. Most of all, it’s great that they are thinking about sustainable transportation options now and in the future.”

Adelphi community members who want to continue to reduce harmful emissions by foregoing single-occupancy vehicles are encouraged to take advantage of the free shuttle service the Department of Public Safety and Transportation provides. The shuttles run every day, have more than 10 destinations, including multiple train stations, and are wheelchair accessible.
