With Flying Colors: Nursing License Pass Rates Are the Highest in Eight Years

For the past 75 years, Adelphi University’s College of Nursing and Public Health (CNPH) has prepared students to take the lead as nurses, administrators and nurse educators who make an impact in their communities and professions. But before launching their nursing careers, they need to clear a very important hurdle: passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), a standardized exam that each state board of nursing uses to determine whether a candidate is prepared for entry-level nursing practice.

Since our faculty is committed to student success, they undertook a number of strategies to assist nursing students in passing the NCLEX, such as increasing the number of simulation-based learning activities, study skills workshops through the Learning Center, and live and virtual NCLEX prep courses.

As a result, for the four quarters of 2018, Adelphi’s first-time pass-rate average rose to 85 percent. Of note, in the third quarter of 2018, the average pass rate was 89.4 percent, which was the highest rate in eight years.

“Our students are actively engaged in their preparation for the exam and we are delighted to see these increasing scores,” said Interim Dean Elaine Smith, Ed.D.

Currently, 1,648 undergraduates and 431 graduate and doctoral students are enrolled in the College, where they study and practice in Adelphi’s new state-of-the-art Nexus Building. The College offers accelerated semesters, an online R.N. to B.S. in Nursing Program, and day, evening and weekend classes throughout the year at Adelphi’s Garden City, Hauppauge, and Hudson Valley locations.
