A Day of Empowerment: Students Learn to Reach for Leadership Roles

Women continue to hold a small percentage of the top positions in corporate America, government and education. It’s a situation that Adelphi is working to address, not only by inspiring its students to strive for leadership roles, but by helping them develop skills that will propel their careers.

On November 4, 2017, the University held its first annual Women’s Leadership Conference, an event offering professional development advice for students as well as alumni in sessions on negotiation, entrepreneurship, innovation and workplace rights. The day began with President Christine M. Riordan’s introduction of the keynote speaker, Kim Petry ’91, who offered a powerful example to the sell-out crowd of attendees. Petry, who graduated first in her class at Adelphi, is the executive vice president and chief financial officer of the financial technology firm Paxos, and has served in similar roles at American Express and TIAA-CREF. She has also devoted much of her time to mentoring women, including launching her own program, Your Empowered Self.
