New Bilingual Coordinator for Adelphi Breast Cancer Program

Long Islander Sandra Martinez is the new Bilingual Outreach Coordinator for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support program, located in Garden City. In this role, she will be responsible for Program Coordination of the Sisters United in Health Breast Education Program, which provides community-based breast cancer outreach, education, and referrals for free or low-cost screenings in underserved communities across Long Island.

Mrs. Martinez, a native of Colombia, received a bachelor’s Degree in Social Communications and Journalism from Bogota and emigrated to the United States in 1997. For the past 16 years, she has worked for the Child Care Council of Nassau as a bilingual parent counselor, providing information to parents and assisting them to meet childcare needs. In Bogota and in New York, Mrs. Martinez worked as a researcher and writer for various Spanish-language media. “As a Latina and as an immigrant woman, I understand the barriers minorities face,” she says. “Because of that, I want to make a difference and help people as best I can.”

Mrs. Martinez has lived in Valley Stream for 19 years with her husband, son, and Golden, their lovely golden retriever dog.

Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program offers emotional support and information to people with and/or concerned about breast cancer. To reach the Hotline, which is staffed by volunteers who are breast cancer survivors, call 800-877-8077.


Sandra Martinez, residente de Long Island, es la nueva Coordinadora de Alcance/Contactos del Programa Estatal del Cáncer y Línea de Ayuda y Programa de Apoyo de La Universidad Adelphi, localizado en Garden City. Ella estará a cargo de la Coordinación del Programa Educativo Sobre la Salud del Seno en Hermanas Unidas en la Salud, el cual provee alcance comunitario, educación, referidos para exámenes gratuitos o a bajo costo en las comunidades más vulnerables de Long Island.

Sandra es colombiana y obtuvo su Título Universitario en Comunicación Social y Periodismo de La Universidad Externado de Colombia. Luego emigró a Los Estados Unidos en 1997. Durante 16 años ella trabajó en el Child Care Council of Nassau como Consejera Bilingüe de Familia, proveyendo información a los padres de familia sobre el cuidado infantil. En Bogotá y en Nueva York trabajó en diferentes medios informativos de prensa en
español. “Cómo Latina e inmigrante, comprendo las barreras y dificultades que nuestra comunidad vive cada día.” Ella dice que por esta razón siempre ha tratado de hacer una diferencia positiva ayudando a las personas en lo mejor que pueda.

Sandra ha vivido en Valley Stream por 19 años, con su esposo, hijo y Golden, su amoroso perro.

El Programa Estatal de Línea de Ayuda y Programa de Apoyo de Adelphi , ofrece apoyo emocional e información a las personas que tengan preocupación o riesgo de cáncer. Puede llamar a la Línea  de Información donde le responderán los voluntarios quienes
