New Password Management Process Helps Adelphi Stay Secure

by Aaron Hoberman

“I’m locked out of my account, can you help me reset my password?” It’s a message that the Help Desk receives multiple times a day, according to Charlie Kulins, manager of customer services for Information Technology.

Cybersecurity is a top priority at Adelphi. In fact, the University has been a National Cyber Security Awareness Champion for four years running. Logging in with a secure password is an important part of keeping intruders out of your account. But as many of Adelphi’s students, staff and faculty have experienced, if you forget your password, it will keep you out too.

Statistics show that over 200 members of the Adelphi community need help resetting their password each month, with that number plateauing in August, when 366 users required assistance.

To save you time and hassle, the Office of Information Technology has implemented a new Password Management Tool that enables you to reset your password at any time, without needing to contact the Help Desk. The new method is more secure as well, removing security questions in lieu of registering your phone and email.

In addition, when you register for the tool, you can download Microsoft Office to use on your personal devices.

Cybersecurity has been a top priority at Adelphi for years. Adelphi employees: You may have received a fishy—or shall we say, phishy—email. Phishing emails look like they’re sent from a legitimate organization or someone you know but are attempts to “lure” you to click on a link and then provide personal information, such as usernames and passwords. You may be aware of phishing because you clicked on an email to discover it was part of the Adelphi Information Security team’s phishing awareness campaign. According to Kees Leune, Ph.D., information security officer and assistant professor of mathematics and computer science, this initiative has done a great job of educating employees of phishing, but he asked that we forward suspicious emails to IT rather than deleting them.
